How were Events born? Where does Lecturameter Quest come from?

Events came out of a chat about easter eggs and a minigame I had to cut. Here is what an Event is, what it sends and when the first one starts.

The truth is that Events came out of a conversation about easter eggs with a Reddit user (that's also where Pagi's glitch skin comes from).

In that post we talked about how, in very early versions of Lecturameter, there was a small easter egg: if you tapped the app's name several times, a minigame inspired by Slay the Spire opened, where you played with the books in your library as if they were cards. I was really excited about the idea, because I love easter eggs, and Slay the Spire 2 had just come out and I was VERY hooked.

However, as much as I loved Book Quest, which is what the game was called, it was pretty hard to maintain:

  • Every card, when played, showed a quote from the book, one of the three quotes each book had to have. It's impossible to have three quotes for every book the app can find, let alone translate them into the 50+ languages it has now.
  • The game system was far too big for a minigame inside an app that has nothing to do with it. You practically had to study to understand it.

There were more reasons why Book Quest wasn't viable, but those were the main ones. So I decided to remove it, even though I was very fond of it.

Back to the present. After that conversation about easter eggs, and remembering Book Quest with some nostalgia, I started thinking about a way to bring it back. Maybe there was a way to fix its problems...

While thinking about how a game like that could fit into an app like Lecturameter, it clicked with another idea I'd had in my head for a while: can you build a community without breaking the app's promise of being mainly local and account-free? If I could figure out how to do Pro without accounts, there had to be a way to bring people together without accounts and bring Book Quest back to life.

And that's how Events came about.

What is an Event? The name gives it away: an Event is a time-limited happening inside Lecturameter.

Do I have to take part? No. Events are completely optional and you can ignore them. If you're not interested, you can turn off Event notifications in Settings > Notifications and you won't get anything.

How do they work? Each Event has its own mechanics and its own rules, which you'll find inside each one. Some will be competitive and some won't.

In each Event you can pick an alias and a Pagi avatar to take part with. These reset with every Event.

Do I need an account? What data is sent? No account needed. You join with an alias: we don't ask for your name or your email. The app only sends your alias, your avatar and whatever counts for that Event (for example, the pages you read while it lasts). Your library stays on your phone.

Which version will I need? Can I take part on iOS and Android? The minimum version will be 3.9, and you'll be able to play on both systems with no problem. There's a single ranking for Android and iOS.

Will there be rewards? For now, the only reward is a card with your final position in the Event, which is saved automatically in My cards. In the future, the idea is to reward competitive Events with Pro codes, exclusive Pagi skins, themes and icons. All of this depends on Google's and Apple's rules allowing it, so I can't promise anything yet.

How will I know an Event is about to start? Some time before it starts there will be a push notification, a badge on the Events icon (the calendar with a clock) and Pagi will let you know too. I'll also announce it on Reddit, Twitter, Instagram and Discord. You'll be able to sign up before it starts to get another notification when it begins; Pagi will remind you again and I'll post the opening announcements.

When will the first Event be? If all goes well, about 14 days after 3.9 launches, on Android and iOS at the same time.

As always, I'm not promising anything. 3.8 is turning out to be a very stable version, and building 3.9 on a solid base gives me a lot of peace of mind. Events have been tested a lot internally, but one person's experience is nothing compared to that of more than 200 users.

What will the first Event be? The first one will be “The Great Read”, a competitive Event where whoever reads the most wins. Lecturameter Quest will arrive some time later.

Can there be more than one Event at a time? Technically yes, but since this is an experimental feature I want to take it step by step.
